déirdre ní mhathúna

Founder member, secretary 2016-22, Chair/Cathaoirleach from 2022

déirdre is a sculpture graduate, a singer and a Gael.   A multi-disciplinary artist with a background in theatre and costume design, her work spans art genres and disciplines but it is always rooted in Gaelic culture, a foundation that naturally leads to a conversational practice.  Her creative dialogue must always leave room for other people – young and old, artists, musicians, curious bystanders or inquisitive critics. Déirdre lives in Scotland’s first-ever housing co-operative, just a stone’s throw from Edinburgh’s historic Little Ireland. She says:

“The need to acknowledge Irish artists, thinkers and dreamers in Scotland’s capital was a driving force in setting up the Little Ireland Arts Collective. Many Irish artists have made their home here in Edinburgh and have much to contribute to this rich cultural melting pot. The Collective gives us a unique lens through which we can explore and nurture our culture, language and identity, with community always at its heart”.
